Many online learning programs can recognize whether a student answered a question correctly or incorrectly and adjust what comes next. But not every wrong answer means the same thing.

A student may have made a careless mistake. They may understand the concept but have missed a step. They may have a genuine misunderstanding. Or that one wrong answer may expose a foundational gap from years earlier. Those students shouldn’t all receive the same response. And the opposite is equally important: a right answer doesn’t always mean a student understands.

That’s why SOAR uses conversational, Socratic instruction. Students are asked to explain, reason, write, reconsider, and demonstrate understanding. The goal isn’t simply to arrive at the correct answer.
