Grammar students build the intellectual foundation they will use for the rest of their education. Instruction makes purposeful use of memorization, recitation, storytelling, copywork, dictation, imitation, structured practice, cumulative review, and increasingly independent reading and writing.
They are not merely collecting facts. They are building the storehouse from which future thinking will draw.
Grammar Students Study
- Bible — A four-year journey through Old Testament I, Old Testament II, the Gospels, and the Early Church.
- Latin — Latin A–D, developing vocabulary, grammar, translation, linguistic precision, recitation, Scripture, prayers, hymns, and classical and Christian texts.
- Language Arts — Grammar, spelling, vocabulary, analogies, copywork, dictation, composition, editing, and revision through mastery-based instruction.
- Mathematics — Personalized, mastery-paced mathematics that allows students to progress according to demonstrated understanding rather than simply their age or grade.
- Omnibus — A four-year historical rotation integrating history, literature, geography, science, art, and music: Ancient · Medieval · Renaissance & Early Modern · Modern.
- Living Wisely, Winsomely, and Well — Christian habits, personal responsibility, practical skills, character, and faithful living.
The Goal of Grammar
Know what is true. Build the knowledge, language, habits, and intellectual foundations required to think deeply later.
When they start to question everything, we teach them how to question well.
Something changes as students enter adolescence. They are no longer satisfied simply knowing what. They want to know how and why.
Good. We teach them what to do with that instinct.
The Logic years move students from absorbing information to examining it. They learn to recognize assumptions, follow arguments, detect fallacies, distinguish truth from error, connect ideas across disciplines, and defend conclusions with reason and evidence.
Rather than discouraging the adolescent instinct to argue, classical education disciplines it.
Logic Students Study
- Formal Logic & Critical Thinking — Students learn how arguments work, how reasoning fails, how to identify fallacies, and how to pursue truth carefully.
- Language Arts — Advanced grammar, composition, editing, spelling, Greek and Latin roots, vocabulary, analogies, argumentative writing, and multi-draft composition.
- Christian Studies & Church History — Students encounter Christian doctrine, the history of the Church, and the ideas and events that have shaped Christian civilization.
- Omnibus — History, literature, geography, philosophy, theology, culture, primary texts, discussion, and writing become an increasingly sophisticated Great Conversation.
- Science — Physical Science and Introduction to Biology.
- Mathematics — Mastery-paced mathematics progressing into Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and the student’s appropriate instructional level.
- Languages — Latin and/or introductory Spanish, according to the student’s program and sequence.
- Living Wisely, Winsomely, and Well — Personal responsibility, discernment, Christian maturity, practical life formation, and faithful independence.
The Goal of Logic
Learn to recognize why it is true. Question carefully. Reason soundly. Discern wisely.
Now they speak. And what they say will matter.
Knowledge is not the end of education. Neither is knowing how to win an argument.
The final stage of classical education asks the student to bring together what he knows, how he thinks, what he believes, and who he is becoming — and communicate truth with wisdom, courage, and grace.
The Rhetoric years are the capstone of the AFA classical sequence. Students wrestle with significant ideas, enter the Great Conversation, develop independent judgment, learn to persuade rather than merely assert, and prepare for college, vocation, leadership, citizenship, family, and calling.
Rhetoric Students Study
- Classical Rhetoric — Critical Writing, Classical Rhetoric I, Classical Rhetoric II, argumentation, research, evidence, rhetorical judgment, public speaking, debate, and persuasive communication.
- Senior Thesis — Students research, write, refine, and formally defend a substantial original thesis using the tools of classical rhetoric.
- Theology & Biblical Worldview — Students study foundational Christian doctrine and learn to examine competing ideas and worldviews through the lens of Scripture.
- Omnibus — Ancient, Medieval, Modern, and American history and thought through great books, primary sources, philosophy, theology, literature, debate, analysis, and persuasive writing.
- Mathematics — Upper-level mathematics according to placement and prerequisites, including Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus.
- Science — Physics, Chemistry, Advanced Biology, and appropriate laboratory sciences.
- Spanish — Spanish I–IV develops listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and cultural understanding.
- Economics & Personal Finance — Preparing students to understand stewardship, markets, personal finance, and responsible adult life.
- College and/or Trade Pathways — Students begin intentionally preparing for what comes after graduation — whether that means university, entrepreneurship, skilled trades, professional training, ministry, or another calling.
- Living Wisely, Winsomely, and Well — Practical wisdom, responsibility, leadership, Christian character, and preparation for adult life.
The Goal of Rhetoric
Know what is true — and learn to communicate it beautifully and persuasively. Think clearly. Speak courageously. Build faithfully.

The stages are different, but they are not disconnected. The stories learned in Grammar become the ideas examined in Logic. The ideas examined in Logic become the convictions defended in Rhetoric.

Old school in a new way.
AFA uses technology differently. We are not replacing a rich classical curriculum with personalized content. The curriculum provides the feast. AFA adapts how it is served.
Students learn through conversational, Socratic instruction that responds to their answers, asks follow-up questions, identifies misconceptions, and requires real understanding before allowing them to move forward.
Mathematics and Language Arts progress according to demonstrated mastery rather than simply the calendar. Other courses follow AFA’s shared academic sequence so students develop the common knowledge required to participate in meaningful academic conversation and the life of the school.
As students mature, responsibility gradually shifts.
Grammar
Parents remain closely involved while students develop habits of increasingly independent learning.
Logic
Students take greater responsibility for schedules, assignments, discussion, revision, and mastery while parents provide accountability and oversight.
Rhetoric
Students increasingly manage their own academic work, long-term projects, deadlines, research, and preparation for life beyond AFA.
The goal is neither dependence nor premature independence. It is responsible independence earned over time.
